A Treasury of Grand Opera
Edited by Henry W. Simon
(New York: Simon & Schuster, 1946)
First Edition
Large (9" by 12") paperbound book with slipcase
Price: $38.00
(This "paperbound" volume actually has a very stiff cover, which might cause some people to mistake it for a hardbound book. The slipcase is rare; most were lost, and this is the only copy we have ever noted that has not lost its slipcase. While the book is in excellent shape for its age--it is a bit, though only a bit, yellowed at the edges--the slipcase is scuffed in places, somewhat split at two corners, and split almost the full length along one edge of the spine end. These splits do not detract from the attractiveness of the slipcover, and in fact add something of an antique patina. Moreover, the slipcase, despite these splits, rmeains quite sturdy and intact. This is a rare opportunity for someone to collect this book with its original slipcase. This amply illustrated volume contains stories, history, and music--piano arrangements with words--to seven operas: Don Giovanni, Lohengrin, La Traviata, Faust, Aida, Carmen, and Pagliacci. At 404 pages, and given its size, this book allows a major immersion (submersion?) in the study of opera.)
